Things to Do at Junipero Beach in Long Beach
Junipero Beach is an amazing mix of sun, sand, activity and art; a treasured stretch of Long Beach’s considerable coastline where one can satisfy their need to chill, eat, breathe, bike or skate. So, whether you’re packing for beach, brunch or basketball, here’s a brief rundown of what you’ll find to do at and around Junipero Beach.
SALTWATER DECK
Whether you’re looking for a cold drink, tasty snack or shady seat with an ocean view, Saltwater Deck (2630 E Ocean Blvd) has got you covered (they’ve got umbrellas!). This beach cafe–literally on the sand–offers everything from pastrami to ice cream, burgers, or banh mi to incredible breakfast burritos rated among the best in the city. They even have a burger patty just for your dog! Steps from the water and bordering both the beach bike path and Junipero sports courts, it’s a great place to load up or wind down.
LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
Sitting high on the bluff above Junipero Beach, the Long Beach Museum of Art (2300 E Ocean Blvd) doesn’t just display art, it frames the coastline. Inside, you’ll find bold, modern works and exhibitions, outside you’ll find a beautiful campus with an amazing view of the Pacific, Queen Mary and Catalina. The campus features Claire’s, the museum’s attached restaurant that offers both exceptional food along with great views. It’s the kind of place where you start with a latte, stay for the art and progress to mimosas and eggs benedict while gazing at the ocean.
JUNIPERO BEACH SPORTS COURTS
If you’re looking to break a sweat with a sea breeze, you should definitely know about the Junipero Beach Sports Courts (411 W Ocean Blvd). This freshly renovated space includes a full basketball court and recently opened roller skating rink beautifully painted in ocean blue and yellow. It’s cool, retro vibe practically begs for neon wheels. Whether you're looking to shoot your shot or cruise in circles to your own playlist, this place brings the energy–whether you like it pumped up or laid back.
YOGA ON THE BLUFF
Yogalution on the Bluff is a daily yoga class at 11 AM on the bluff overlooking Junipero Beach. Offered by Yogalution Movement & Wellness (244 Redondo Ave), these sessions are held on the lawn located at the corner of Ocean Boulevard and Junipero Avenue overlooking the ocean. Evening sessions at 6 PM on weekdays are offered seasonally from April to October. The mix of locals, newbies, and seasoned yogis makes it feel like a neighborhood hang, not just a class—and yes, the ocean breeze does make your warrior pose feel more serene and centered.
SHORELINE PEDESTRIAN/BICYCLE PATH
The most popular trail in the city, this paved, three-mile stretch from Shoreline Village to Alamitos Bay is a 17-foot wide path that ribbons its way through Junipero Beach. If you find yourself in need of a bike, you can rent one at Wheel Fun Rentals (429 Shoreline Village Dr) in Shoreline Village. With one lane for wheels and another for feet, you can move as you choose, as fast–or not fast–as you like.
