First Wednesdays at the Aquarium
June 4, 7:00pm
In 2013, sea star wasting syndrome began devastating sea star populations along the west coast, with sunflower stars becoming locally extinct. This species was typically found in shallow coastal waters where they served as a keystone predator, protecting kelp forests from overgrazing by urchins. Since then, many complex kelp forest ecosystems have become what are known as urchin barrens.
Join us for a compelling presentation on sunflower sea stars, the crucial role they play in kelp forest ecosystems, the devastating effects of sea star wasting disease, the captive breeding programs and ongoing efforts to restore their populations, and the importance of community involvement in the conservation work of this endangered species.
Sunflower Star Laboratory aims to develop methods and mobilize resources to grow sunflower stars at the scale needed for recovery. In this talk, you will discover their latest research, learn about the first cohort of human-reared juvenile sunflower stars in California, and delve into their collaborative nature with universities, aquariums, scientists, and conservation organizations to aid in the management and restoration of sea stars for the health of our kelp forests.
Following the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy cocktails, conversations, music, and crafts in our Art Gallery and experience our interactive Paint-a-Fish exhibit.
