Cuisine Scene: Pie

Long Beach is a Pie Town, home to some seriously crave-worthy, crust-contained creations. Here, you’ll find not only the classic fruit-filled favorites, but also bold and inventive takes on traditional recipes. Indulge your sweet tooth with nostalgic slices or modern twists—some served in jars. You can even create your own customizable combos (FRANKENPIE!). Here are some great spots where you can grab your perfect piece of the pie.

LAURIE’S PIE BAR

Laurie’s Pie Bar (450 Pine Ave) is without a doubt one of the city’s most beloved pie palaces. Created-from-scratch flavors range from Key Lime and Salted Caramel to Whiskey Peach and Ube Coconut. Their adorably delicious Cutie Pies are pies created in small, portable glass jars and their Frankenpie allows you to congregate six slices of your choice of flavors in one awesome pie collective. There are also vegan pies, sugar free, gluten-free, even pies for your pup.

POLLY’S PIES

When one heads to Polly’s Pies (3490 Atlantic Ave), you can expect an extremely curated pie experience, one that leans heavily on the classics: apple, cherry, chocolate cream, etc. Still, their signature pie is an amazing amalgam of strawberries and banana called, wait for it, Banberry. It combines banana creme filling, topped with fresh strawberries, all of it ringed with a healthy band of real whipped cream.

HOF’S HUT

It doesn’t get any more traditional in Long Beach than Hof’s Hut (2147 N Bellflower Blvd). This local institution has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for more than 70 years, greeting each guest to its Los Altos location with a large refrigerated case of incredible looking pies at its entrance. There are so many favorites–chocolate cream, apple and peach–but it’s the spectacularly sweet architecture of its signature strawberry pie–piled high with ruby red, glistening strawberries–that looks and tastes scrumptious!
