Black Cowboys: More Than a Myth - Exhibition Opening

The African American Cultural Center of Long Beach (AACCLB) is opening a new exhibition called Black Cowboys: More Than a Myth honoring the remarkable yet often overlooked history of Black cowboys and their enduring influence on the American West. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, August 7, 2026, with an Opening Reception that evening during First Fridays in Bixby Knolls.

As part of the Opening Reception, visitors will have the unique opportunity to meet featured Southern California cowgirl and former Long Beach resident Chanel Rhodes, along with other special guests, as they share their passion for preserving the traditions and legacy of the American West.

Through compelling historical displays, photographs, artifacts, and educational panels, Black Cowboys: More Than a Myth explores the significant role African Americans played in shaping the American frontier and preserving the rich traditions of Western culture.

The exhibition features:

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday 11 AM to 4 PM, and Thursday and Friday 2 to 7 PM.
